Before the 15th century...
Pawns could only move forward one square at a time...
So this pawn, by moving forward...
Exposes itself to be captured next turn
But after the 15th century….
Pawns could move forward two squares on their first move
And avoid being captured!
The en passant rule exists to make sure
This pawn can still be taken...
